From experience, awareness raising sessions have minimal impact majorly because they aim to educate people on specific topical issues e.g women rights, violence prevention but measuring impact can be a challenge. Having targeted sessions for instance with men, women, leaders etc and doing it in a structured way e.g using a curriculum is more impactful since you can tracl progress and measure change over time. In addition, awareness raising sessions are good if coupled up with other interventions to reinforce the learning and diffusing the information to more actors.

A challenge in most instances is organizations not having adequate resources to implement evidence based programs thus they resort to short term touch and go interventions. I feel donors need to be cognizant of this so that funding for violence prevention programs is adequately resourced both financially and being long term, it takes time to see a shift in attitudes among the target groups.

My name is Nancy Njeru from Kenya. A passionate child protection and safeguarding specialist. Currently implementing a VAC/W prevention program in Kenya. Excited to be part of this learning cohort. Looking forward to learn, relearn and unlearn the best practices in violence prevention and how to practically apply them in programming.
