Course summary

Join our free, virtual course on social and behaviour change (SBC) for violence prevention. Learn how to apply SBC approaches to the design and implementation of violence prevention programming, with a focus on preventing violence in the family.

Through interactive sessions, you will connect with other practitioners, share experiences and insights, and apply practical tools to your programming context. Upon successful completion of the course, you will earn a certificate from Prevention Collaborative.

This course is part of a comprehensive suite of online learning opportunities designed to strengthen the capacity of practitioners and implementing organisations working to prevent violence.

      Strengthen your capacity to prevent violence in the family using effective social and behaviour change (SBC) strategies.

        OVERVIEW

        This course includes six live, virtual sessions:

        1. Understanding Social and Behaviour Change (SBC)
        2. Identifying Key Actors for Change
        3. Understanding Key Drivers of Behaviours
        4. Behaviour Change Strategies
        5. Selecting Appropriate SBC Strategies
        6. Policy Options

        LEARNING OBJECTIVES

        By the end of the course, you will be able to:

        • Distinguish between attitudes, social/gender norms and behaviours and how they relate. 
        • Identify behavioural goals for different actors to guide effective programme design.
        • Map key behaviours to strategies across the socio-ecological model for violence prevention.
        • Use the behaviour change COM-B framework to explore what supports behaviour change.
        • Understand how behaviour change can contribute to efforts to reduce violence in the family.

        Format

        This interactive course is designed to encourage participation and learning among participants. Sessions include participant sharing, presentations, and group work, facilitated by Prevention Collaborative’s experienced facilitators.

        Weekly take-home assignments will support deeper reflection and practice. Please note that the course will be conducted in English.

        Participant profile

        This course is for individuals who design or implement violence prevention programmes, especially those with experience working with violence in the family. It’s ideal for:

        • Programme designers and implementers
        • Technical advisors 
        • Practitioners with an SBC background looking to apply it to violence prevention

        You should be ready to reflect on your work and share insights with other participants.

        PREREQUISITE

        To enrol for this course, you must have completed the Prevention Essentials course (facilitated or self-paced). If you haven’t yet, enrol here and complete it before 22 June 2026. If you already have a certificate of completion for either the facilitated or self-paced Prevention Essentials course, there is no need to repeat it!

        We also encourage learners to take the Transforming Gender Norms self-paced course to deepen their understanding of how social norms interact with behaviour change.
