Parenting is about taking responsibility for raising the children in a loving environment rather than just focusing on the man as the head of the household. We have families that are headed by a man only or a woman only who are able to bring up children well and we also have those who are raised by both parents who are either absentees or violent and these can affect the children negatively.
Both men and women should share equal responsibility in raising children as well as household tasks, this should also extend to both boys and girls at home.
Positive reinforcement (or positive discipline) has been found to be more impactful to children by recognizing good behavior and not just looking out for mistakes in order to punish them. Building close relationship with children where there is open communication can also help them to have good behavior.
Men are adults who are capable of exercising self-control and this should not be used as an excuse to justify VAW and VAC.

In this community Mercy (and we can assume many other girls) are unable to complete school and this limits the opportunities that they can access later in life. Mercy dropped out of school due to lack of school fees to proceed beyond primary, but she also indicates that boys’ education is prioritized as girls are only seen as wives and mothers. She would like for her daughter to complete her studies but she already knows they cannot afford it so she opts to teach her how to be a good wife and mother. This will in turn lead to economic violence as the men will have access to more opportunities and because they may control the household budget then this can be a trigger of violence. Mercy had no choice in marrying Clinton after she got pregnant so that he could look after her and he frequently beats her.
