  • By establishing the mindset that women are not as of much value as men.

She is already passing this on to her daughter thereby continuing the cycle of violence and not seeking options for her daughter to have the best of opportunities. She could also eventually become fatally injured or die.

Providing channels for them to give feedback about the programme and acting on that feedback.

Understanding what the gender norms and practices are in order to inform design of activities – so conducting the gender power analysis before and continually during programme implementation.

Ensuring representation of all profiles of women and men across ethnicity, religion, social and economic status.

Venues need to be safe and security provided when needed during activities.

Be aware of the composition of the programme implementation team and also making sure we are equipped with tools and capacity to best serve the community.

I would place the VAW awareness raising activity for women and men in universal prevention on the continuum because it is targeted at general populations and people of concern.

in reply to: Reflect and discuss: Why prevention in Mercy’s story #252255

The cost of violence in Mercy’s community is extensive affects the overall wellbeing of the community and is being accepted as normal and manifesting as cultural violence. It needs to be addressed with urgency in order to tackle the root causes and support collaborative efforts towards ending VAW.

Awareness raising activities about what VAW is and its consequences among both women and men can be a prevention focussed activity.

Hello everyone, I am Safiya Ibn Garba. I live in Amman, Jordan.

My work in the conflict, peacebuilding and sustainable development space will greatly benefit from this course and others on offer. It is very useful to have more resources on the preventative side rather than just on the response side so I am expecting to become more informed about practical ways of approaching the concept of violence against women and their children through prevention.

Looking forward to the exchange and learning!

    S
