Gender inequality inhibits girls’ access to education, this they cannot compete in the job market. the preference for boys to go to formal schools as girls learn care roles creates inequality and different opportunities for boys and girls. Boys become powerful and can access opportunities later in life as girls (illiterate and unexposed) become powerless women and thus at risk of abuse. The fact that girls grow up seeing violence against their mothers, they normalize violence against them and teach their children to accept it as a way of life. This way, the vicious cycle of violence continues.
In the community, even the church reinforces messages of female submission and male dominance, as men are supported to continue the formal school system, girls are encouraged to take on social care roles which are not remunerated. They are also taught values of submission in community settings such as churches.

The fact that girls grow up seeing violence against their mothers, they normalize violence against them and teach their children to accept it as a way of life. This way, the vicious cycle of violence continues and is passed on through socialization. This is seen how Mercy is parenting Angel – telling her to accept that women should be treated as such.
When women experience violence, they lose their self-esteem and start thinking of themselves less than men. They feel less entitled of justice, opportunities and protection.

In what ways does gender inequality enable violence in Mercy’s life and community?
Gender inequality in her community denies women and girls a chance to go to school and pursue their careers unlike the boys and men, as a result women become dependent on the men for providence and care that gives men total authority and control over the women’s physical, emotional and financial state.
Gender inequality denies women the freedom of expression, this as a result expose women to violence and since they are silenced the die silently and the cases go unaddressed giving chance to future repetition of the assault.

In what ways could violence worsen gender inequalities in her life?
Violence makes women live in fear and as a result do not report. This therefore, give chance to the men to keep violating the women as no action can be taken against them, in fact, the perception of women being inferior and men superior is carried on from generation to generation.
Children who grow in homes where the woman is violated tend to adapt a mentality of inequality and the women’s subordinate status. They therefore, start practicing that as they grow.

Gender inequality enable violence in Mercy’s life and community due to the fact that , she was deprived of educational rights of becoming a medical doctor and social life of playing football, all these are a way of gender inequalities that promotes violence against women and girls in her community, to the point of believing its normal for men to beat their wife until she heard it over radio, that its illegal for men to beat their wife

Violence worsen gender inequalities in her life to point of believing that, it is a normal thing which prompt her to accept it as normal situation, passing the patriarchal belief to her daughter to behave well as prospective wife to be, in her life time too. This strengthen gender inequalities in this community

Gender inequalities enable violence against women in Mercy’s community. It’s not understandable that one is not allowed to play with others because of his sex. Mercy liked to play football but can’t play it because she is a girl. She can’t even continue her studies while her brother go on with his studies. This perpetrate these inequalities generations to generations. After she heard on radio that It’s forbiden to bit wives, she’ve been suprised to mean that disorder is like institutionalized.
