There are multiple risks that is experienced across level – agency and inter-personal level and also based on one’s gender – women like Mercy are at high risk, experience in their life time (Mercy witnessed his father beating her mother) and that violence as acceptable behaviour at family and community (believed to be a sign of love) at the level of Mercy husband at agency, he married at young age -pressure of looking after the family, and alcohol abuse also trigger violence. At inter-personal, friends also fuels violence to include lack of social support, poor communication skills that was experienced in Mercy and his husband life and violence was also viewed as acceptable a weapon to disciple wives. Relationship may also contribute to IPV e.g. women asking about how are financial resources are used, men’s failure to provide for the family, puts too much pressure on them and affect their ego.

Lack of education and harmful practices and punitive policies and unsupportive systems and structural inequalities leaves women voiceless because they lack information and skills to survive and this leads to child marriage, a vicious cycle that affect their children too and community practices reinforces such behaviours

the activities will take a holistic approach of the prevention, selective and responsive that would require the whole community to take action. Targeting spouses in dialogues (selective) for behavior change and targeting women in VSLAs and adolescents on comprehensive sexuality education to build their agency

Mercy’s story, shows that she has been exposed to violence in many forms that include physical, psychological/ emotional, and economic that has too resulted in her girl child dropping out to look after her siblings as well as help her with market ventures. So its imperative to prevent violence to avoid recurrence or increase severity.

Activities to prevent violence should target agency, inter-relations, community and systems and of key from Mercy story should include economic activities to boost their household financial streams so as to meet basic needs, promote power to contribute in decision making regarding resource utilization and to meet the needs of her girl child to include education
